Inviting Expression of Interest – Churners Initiative

Activities: Others

Last Date of Submission (Extended): October 27, 2013

Expression of Interest:

India is passing through a tumultuous phase of change and social, political and cultural upheaval. There is a need of developing a cadre of potential individuals who not only understand the multitude of social, economic and political issues which affect the lives of the citizens in this country, but who can also act as catalysts and change-makers in the given milieu. We would like to call such individuals the “Churners”.

IGSSS with its over 50 years of rich work experience at the grassroots considers it appropriate to develop a one-year module for young people interested in the developmental processes that affect the lives of the people in this country. The aim is to select 10 churners through a multi-level selection process and expose them to a number of issues through an integration of theory and practice on the field.

Earlier endeavours of IGSSS along similar lines included SMILE Fellowship, which promoted youth leadership and engagement of young people in social action, which helped in creating a high impact learning opportunity for young fellows leading them towards the goal of positive transformation in the society. Media Fellowship Programme in Kashmir (2011) was yet another attempt to support writers, journalists and film makers to conduct research on development, local governance and human rights with a goal of promoting effective communication, greater awareness and also facilitating a process of sensitization on development issues among media professionals.

The focus of the ‘Churners Initiative’ is to build leadership skills with critical understanding of the issues and facilitate Churners to take decisions with a broader social perspective. The programme is also intended to provide value addition to what the candidate has learned over the years and to enable him/her to be the Churner in the society. It is expected that the trained young visionaries would be able to take leadership positions in a period of 10 to 15 years.

We are inviting application/nomination from potential change makers (Churners) to join us in this process of change. The candidates for this programme will be selected from different fields such as Social Work, Sociology, Management, media / journalism etc. The broad thematic areas in which they will be trained include the following:

 Inclusion – social responsibility
 Gender and positioning of women in society
 Perspectives for youth
 Conflict resolution – issues of human rights violation – AFSPA
 Land reforms, just distribution of resources

IGSSS would evaluate and consider for publication the monographs of the Churners submitted on completion of their term. IGSSS will have the first right of publication and will have the copyright of the monograph submitted by the Churner.

• The term of Churners’ Fellowship would initially be for a period of one year, extendable by another year, but in no case will extend beyond two years.
• Selected Churners would be provided orientation and also financial assistance of Rs. 15,000.00 per month as stipend. This is besides other related expenses of field travel, and training of selected Churners.
• Churners shall be assigned a mentor close to the state/district of residence.
• Applications of individuals who have been a recipient of scholarship assistance of IGSSS within a period of last five years will not be considered.

The prescribed application form can also be obtained from the IGSSS Regional Offices in Guwahati, Kolkata, Srinagar, Baroda, Bangalore including Delhi by sending a self-addressed envelope (5×11″) with postage stamp of Rs. 10 affixed. The EOI/application on the prescribed form may be sent to the CHURNERS INITIATIVE, Indo-Global Social Service Society, 28, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, new Delhi – 110003.
